Residents creating a cleaner, greener, safer Garfield.
There is now a butterfly garden at the Nelson Mandela Peace Park! This project was a Love Your Block through the City of Pittsburgh. “Love Your Block” is a partnership of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and The Home Depot Foundation to revitalize Pittsburgh block by block. Through the grant we were able to purchase raised garden beds for plants. We were also fortunate to receive a Kaboom grant to purchase plants and soil for the garden. Designer, Lauren Cohen from The Farm and Garden, created a beautiful butterfly garden design for us to implement.
We had over 15 volunteers from the neighborhood; kids who live close to the park and use it daily came to help plant as well. We also had a several young men from Garfield CISP who worked extremely hard shoveling soil and mulch into the beds. This was a big project to complete, we couldn’t have gotten it all done without our dedicated volunteers!
Our hope for this project that it will not only attract some wildlife to the park (butterflies and birds) but it will also create more a reason for nearby neighbors to visit the park to enjoy the flowers. We want to bring positive energy and people to this park to help combat some of the negative things that happen at the park. We will also be planning more events at this park this summer.
Another positive note: This summer the City of Pittsburgh also has committed to repaving the playground surface as well as repainting and repairing the playground equipement.
Thank you for everyone’s help and support! We hope that this will be a positive step for the Nelson Mandela Peace Park.
