Residents creating a cleaner, greener, safer Garfield.
Garfield neighbors, CMU Volunteers, and GCAT got together this weekend to transform the front of Garfield Activity Center with new landscaping! Perennial plants were all donated from neighbors in Garfield, East Liberty, Morningside, and Friendship! BGC donated soil and a rain barrel (soon to be installed). The BGC Activity Center is located at 113 N. Pacific Street in Garfield and is used frequently by the neighborhood for meetings, summer camps, kids programing, and other resident events.
According to one neighbor who’s lived nearby the Activity Center on N. Pacific Street for over 60 years, she said as long as she could remember, there was always broken concrete in front of the building (which was once a church). The neighbor was excited to see the new greenery and excited for when the flowers bloom next spring. She was excited to see some pretty landscaping in her neighborhood.
Neighbors will continue to help maintain this green space and water plants, weed, and clean up litter. This green space is just one of the many green spaces maintained by neighbors on N. Pacific Street leading to a set of city steps. This project couldn’t have happened without the help of so many volunteers from CMU and neighbors. Keep an eye out for this space as it blooms in the spring, it’s going to look beautiful!
